Feather Basics with Quilting Templates & Kate Quinn

Welcome to Quilt N Bee! We're excited to offer our introductory class for ruler work on domestic sewing machines. This class is perfect for those who are just starting out with ruler work or who want to refine their skills.

In this 6-hour class, we'll cover everything you need to know to get started with ruler work. We'll begin by discussing machine setup and the use of the spacing gauge and basic templates. We'll also cover starting and stopping techniques to ensure that your ruler work is precise and consistent.

After covering the basics, we'll move on to more advanced techniques. We'll explore using a stitching in the ditch, straight and curved feather designs, and options for different spine treatments. In the afternoon, we'll have some fun and cover more interesting feather designs.

To participate in this class, you'll need to bring some specific tools with you. These include a machine-specific ruler foot, a Westalee 12” arc template, Westalee Stable Tape ruler grips*, a Westalee Spacing Gauge, and a Westalee Feathers Template Set. An optional Feather Spine Template is also available.

This class is designed for beginners, so no prior experience is necessary. We'll guide you through the entire process and help you develop the skills you need to create beautiful ruler work on your domestic sewing machine.

We can't wait to see you in class!

Instructor Bio: I was born and raised in Covina CA. I graduated from West Point Military Academy in 1991 and started a life together with my husband Patrick as we both served in the Army. I left the service in 1998 to be home with my 5 fabulous children. My fascination with quilting began when I received a Grandmother?s Flower Garden quilt as a wedding present. The gift of a second scrappy quilt further solidified my love of fabrics and colors. I made my first quilt to celebrate the birth of my first child around 1993. I had loved quilting ever since. I love all styles and types of quilts from art to modern, from traditional pieced to applique. It connects people of any age and generation. I stayed at home with my five children for about 18 years. Quilting became my social connection, the one thing that ?mom? did for herself. With my family having served in the Army for over 28 years, we have moved more than 20 times. Quilting has always helped me make friends and build connections in my new communities. I began teaching quilting skills about 16 years ago through the community, but in 2014, I began working and teaching at local shops and guilds on a consistent basis. In 2016, I also became a professional longarm quilter, opening FabriKated Quilts. I have taught at Houston Quilt Festival, Road to California, and even internationally in China in 2019. In 2016, I was first introduced to Sew Steady?s Westalee Design Quilting Templates. I was instantly hooked! Rulerwork tools have helped me advance my quilting skills more that I ever dreamt possible. I am thrilled and proud to be a Sew Steady Education Ambassador and a Westalee Design Acredited Teacher. The freedom and creativity generated by these tools is so satisfying. I want to give that power to quilters everywhere.
